Choosing a Physiotherapist
Physiotherapists use physical treatments to promote, maintain and restore wellbeing, focussing on maximising the capability of patients to move freely and easily so they can enjoy and improve their health.
If you suffer from back or neck pain, a sports injury, arthritis - in fact any joint or muscle problem - physiotherapy can help relieve your pain and get you moving again.
Physiotherapists are trained to assess the underlying causes of joint, muscle and nerve injuries and provide effective treatment using a wide range of drug-free techniques to relieve pain, restore movement and prevent further problems. For example:
- Sports and Leisure: See a Physio for pain relief and the speediest return to your sporting activities. Physiotherapists are highly qualified and trained in the assessment and treatment of sports injuries. As they have comprehensive knowledge of biomechanics, tissue injury and healing, many Physiotherapists are appointed to sports teams to monitor the rehabilitation of injured players and assist with preventing injuries.
- At work: Physiotherapists can help you improve the safety and efficiency of your work practices. Whether working at home, in the office or factory or on the farm, you may experience back pain, neck pain, headaches, muscle strains or sciatica. Your Physio is well equipped to treat the problem and teach you good working habits.
- Pregnancy and afterwards: Physios run exercise programs to keep you fit before the birth of your child and get you back in shape afterwards. Antenatal classes will give you an understanding of the changes women experience before, during and after childbirth and techniques for ensuring your postnatal recovery is safe and trouble-free.
How we recommend individual Physiotherapists
The Physiotherapy Appointment Line takes special care that the Physios we recommend deliver excellent care. We use the most reliable information available - patient feedback - to ensure that we are recommending Physiotherapists who deliver high levels of satisfaction. This feedback process is supported by our Guarantee which means that we refund the initial consultation fee of any patient not satisfied with the Physiotherapist we recommend.
In addition, practitioners are only eligible for referrals from the Physiotherapy Appointment Line if there are no complaints about them currently lodged with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
Physiotherapy Training
Chartered Physiotherapists undertake degree courses at University studying full-time for three or four years. During this time they complete over 1,000 hours of clinical physio practice in a number of different specialities. After this initial period of training a Physiotherapist is most likely to work within a general NHS hospital to gain experience. In addition to their education background, Physiotherapists recommended by Physiotherapy Appointment Line have many years of experience in private practice.
Physiotherapy courses have substantial overlap with medical training, covering anatomy, physiology, pathology, biomechanics, and clinical methods. This experience means that physiotherapists are able to identify conditions where physiotherapy is not suitable and refer patients to a GP for further investigation.
Professional Regulation
Patients visiting a Physiotherapist have the same rights as any patient visiting a doctor. In the UK the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy regulates, promotes and develops the profession of Physiotherapy, maintaining a Statutory Register of those entitled to practise. Only practitioners meeting high standards of education, safety and competency are eligible to join this register. Proof of good health, good character and professional indemnity insurance cover is also a requirement. Of course, the Physiotherapy Appointment Line only refers patients to Physiotherapists in good standing with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
