Case studies on physiotherapy

A strained hamstring, a locked shoulder, a stiff neck - these sorts of conditions affect almost all of us at some stage and are traditionally not well treated by GPs. Increasingly people are looking to Physiotherapists for a more hands-on approach to treating these - and many other - conditions with impressive results.

Physiotherapy Appointment Line has pulled together a selection of real-life stories showing the impact and effectiveness of physiotherapy in treating both acute and chronic musculo-skeletal conditions.

Patient Name:

Lucy, West London

Symptoms:

Tennis elbow - even though I do not play tennis I fell over in the supermarket and for months after that I had a very painful elbow which made work really difficult.

Treatment:

The physio applied heat and ultrasound to my elbow and very gently helped me move it. He also gave me some exercises to do whenever I had a spare minute or two which I did find helpful and could do on the train or at my desk.

Feedback:

My physio was very gentle with my sore elbow. The results were not miraculous but I felt much better after a couple of sessions and pretty much perfect again after 4 visits.

Patient Name:

Robert, Notting Hill

Symptoms:

I bent over in the shower to pick up my shampoo and felt the top of my neck lock in an odd way. By the time I was getting dressed I felt like a puppet

Treatment:

The physio used a combination of electro-therapy, heat and massage before some gentle manipulation.

Feedback:

I was feeling much freer after the first sessions. After my second session I felt pretty much back to normal and I continued to improve over the next week until perfect. I have been given some exercises to strengthen my back, but I am not great at doing them…

Patient Name:

Nat, Bromley

Symptoms:

I usually run 3 times a week and for at least 5 miles, sometimes even 10. After a two week holiday when I did not train I tried a long run and after 2 miles I pulled my hamstring muscle. It was incredibly sore - I limped home - and was worse the next day.

Treatment:

My physio did heaps of ultrasound, massage and stretching on my hamstring. I also had stretching to do at home.

Feedback:

I know I would eventually have gotten better by resting but I was worried about whether I would fully recover - and I wanted to get back into running faster. I was back at it again after 4 weeks and I am sure it would have taken longer otherwise. I also got a lot of advice about how to avoid future injury by better stretching and also some different trainers.
